Larnaca Biennale 2021

It is with great pleasure we announce the second edition of Larnaca Biennale, an International Exhibition of Fine Arts that will take place on the 13th of October until the 26th of November 2021 under the Biennale trademark.

Larnaca Biennale had its first edition in 2018. With more than 18.000 visitors at the main exhibition and more than 4.000 spectators attending the parallel events, Larnaca Biennale is the biggest and most popular International arts event in Cyprus.

Although the second edition of the Larnaca Biennial was postponed for a year due to the covid-19 pandemic, that allowed the organisers to prepare and consider all possible scenarios for a proper and successful edition in 2021.

Larnaca Biennale 2021 has already established the continuation of the 2018 success considering that one month before the end of the international open call for artwork submissions, artists from 35 countries have already applied.

In this edition the open call for artists is under the theme ”Limitless limits” conceived by Curator Vassilis Vassiliades.

International Jury committee members are: Curator and art critic Jean Blanchaert from Milan Italy, Florence Biennale Chief curator, and art scholar Dr Melanie Zefferino, Katina Kosta President of Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts and Kikis Patsalos, Sculptor.

In addition to the main exhibition at the Larnaca Municipal Gallery, Pierides Museum and other exhibition places, the Biennial will host a series of artistic and culture parallel events, such as concerts, theater, performances, lectures, workshops, organized tours for schools / visitors etc.

Co-organizer is ARTION Cultural Association of Larnaca. Main supporter of the Biennial is the Municipality of Larnaca and several art organizations and institutions including “The Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts, E.KA.TE” and ‘’WAVA, World Association of Visual Arts’’.

The main objective of the Larnaca Biennale organizers is to establish a truly global event with high quality standards that puts Larnaca and Cyprus on the world map of the most important international art events.

If you are an artist, join us for the competition.

If you are an art lover join to experience the Larnaca Biennale 2021!

Art, the Lady Weaver

by Vassilis Vassileiades , Larnaca Biennale 2021 Curator

The time limits of the Biennale have changed so that the Biennale could remain the same.

Let me put it the other way round, if you don’t mind the redundancy: if its limits hadn’t been changed, then the Biennale itself would have been forced to change.

Therefore, the Larnaca Biennale is still well on its way to becoming. The circumstances might have extended our journey to the final destination, but time was never of particular concern to Art.

2020, deferred until 2021 counts as merely one year in the calendar. But in real life it feels like ages. With good cause too, as this is how long it would normally take for the earth’s cogwheels to turn and rearrange facts, priorities and necessities.

The ruptured social fabric is now being woven anew from within.

And Art, the lady weaver, works double time so that when, at long last, humanity will heal and exit from the darkness, it will be able to face its reflection on the mirror undaunted.

There is something in which we have been well-trained since the first Biennale of 2018: move on, even in conditions of limited visibility.

In the words of Georges Braque: “There is only one valuable thing in art: the thing you cannot explain”.

It is precisely this unexplainable “something” that will be waiting for us in October and November 2021 at the Larnaca Municipal Gallery, the Pierides Museum and the rest of the exhibition areas; in the theatres, the galleries, the streets of Larnaca, with parallel events from Lefkara to Athienou.

For new, “limitless limits”.
