Wide participation at the 6th Beyond Borders International Documentary Film Festival, Castellorizo Island
More than 567 documentaries by Greek and foreign documentary film directors – a record number after the recent pandemic – were submitted for review at the 6th Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival, which will be held in the idyllic island of Castellorizo, Greece from on August 22 -29, 2021.
The Preselection Committee will review 567 documentaries and select the best ones for the Festival’s Competition Program as well as the Panorama Section (films outside competition). The results will be announced by June 2021.
This year’s Preselection Committee members included: Markus Nikel – Senior Advisor at International Coproductions RAI, Alexia Papakosta – Member of the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME), Jean Louis Gonterre- Film Director, Natasha Bozini – Screenwriter, Journalist, Alexander Papaeliou – Film Director Katerina Tzigotzidou – Photographer, Guelfo Ascanelli – Film Curator – Italy/France, Tasos Giapoutzis – Film Director, Ruggero Calich – Documentary Critic, Senior Advisor, Nick Zappas – Film Director and Giorgos Mantas – Film Director.
This year’s Festival Jury consists of Klaus Eder – General Secretary of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), Marianna Economou – President of the Greek Documentary Association – Jean-Christoph Caron – Head of PHOENIX, Bruno Chatelin – Festival Αgent and Maro Anastopoulou – Director.
The Jury will award the following prizes: Best History Documentary, Best Socio-political Documentary, Best Short Length Documentary – all of them a kind courtesy of the Hellenic Parliament -, Best Greek Documentary, sponsored by Greek Film Centre (GFC), the Special Award of Mediterranean Friendship by National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME Media) and the Special Award of Odyssey courtesy of the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival is rooted on the idyllic island of Castellorizo on the edge of the Aegean Sea, a place of breath-taking natural beauty and huge historical heritage.
Beyond Borders Festival offers European, Mediterranean and overseas audiences once a year, a collection of compelling films dealing with historical, cross-cultural events, trends and personalities that have shaped our countries, peoples and civilizations. The objective of this “boutique” documentary festival is to celebrate the excellence in cinematographic storytelling centered on History and Society. Beyond Borders is about History now and before, here and everywhere.
Beyond Borders is organized by the Hellenic History Foundation, in co-organization with Ecrans des Mondes (Paris). The 6th Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival will be held under the patronage of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Ms. Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The Festival is supported by the Hellenic Parliament, the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Municipality of Megisti, the Embassies of Australia and the U.S. in Athens. The main sponsors are the Ministry of Culture , the Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, EKOME and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation.
