Specialty Club New Voices D117A, Lions Clubs International – “Voicing Autism” Branch Marks World Autism Awareness Day with a Call for Urgent Change April 2, 2025
On this World Autism Awareness Day, the “Voicing Autism” branch of the Specialty Club New Voices D117A, Lions Clubs International, raises its voice to demand systemic change, global solidarity, and radical inclusion for autistic individuals.
This year’s observance is marked by grief and resolve, following the tragic suicide of an 18-year-old autistic youth in Greece on March 25. Isolated, misunderstood, and unsupported, his death reflects a broader, global failure to offer autistic people what every human being deserves: dignity, connection, and hope.
We echo the words of Dr. Temple Grandin: “I am different, not less.” These words have become a rallying cry for the neurodivergent community — a powerful reminder that being autistic is not a deficit, but a difference. What must change is not autistic people, but the conditions in which they are expected to survive.
Autism is not a tragedy. The tragedy is exclusion. The tragedy is when society withholds empathy, flexibility, and investment in accessible structures. The tragedy is when we demand compliance instead of offering understanding.
As members of Lions Clubs International, we are committed to building a world where service means listening — to autistic voices, to experiences, and to the call for justice. We reject coercive or harmful interventions. We call instead for inclusive education, community-based supports, and the full participation of autistic people in decisions that affect their lives.
This World Autism Awareness Day, we do not ask for awareness alone. We demand action. We envision a world where difference is celebrated, where neurodivergence is not hidden or punished, and where no young person feels so unseen that they choose not to remain in this world.
Let us honor those we’ve lost by building a future that embraces those still here.

Με αφορμή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Αυτισμού, η ομάδα Voicing Autism της Specialty Club New Voices D117A, Lions Clubs International, υψώνει τη φωνή της και ζητά συστημική αλλαγή, παγκόσμια αλληλεγγύη και ριζική συμπερίληψη των αυτιστικών ατόμων.
Η φετινή ημέρα σημαδεύεται από θλίψη και αποφασιστικότητα, μετά την αυτοκτονία ενός 18χρονου αυτιστικού νέου στην Ελλάδα στις 25 Μαρτίου. Η απομόνωση, η παρεξήγηση και η απουσία υποστήριξης αντικατοπτρίζουν μια ευρύτερη παγκόσμια αποτυχία να προσφέρουμε στα αυτιστικά άτομα όσα αξίζουν: αξιοπρέπεια, σύνδεση, ελπίδα.
Όπως είπε η Dr. Temple Grandin: «Είμαι διαφορετική, όχι κατώτερη. » Αυτή η φράση έχει γίνει σύνθημα για την κοινότητα των νευροδιαφορετικών – υπενθύμιση ότι ο αυτισμός δεν είναι έλλειψη, αλλά διαφορά. Αυτό που χρειάζεται αλλαγή δεν είναι οι ίδιοι οι αυτιστικοί άνθρωποι, αλλά οι συνθήκες μέσα στις οποίες καλούνται να επιβιώσουν.
Ο αυτισμός δεν είναι τραγωδία. Η τραγωδία είναι ο αποκλεισμός. Η τραγωδία είναι η έλλειψη ενσυναίσθησης, ευελιξίας και επένδυσης σε δομές προσβάσιμες και ανθρώπινες.
Ως μέλη των Lions, δεσμευόμαστε να υπηρετούμε με σεβασμό και ακρόαση – να ακούμε τις αυτιστικές φωνές, τις εμπειρίες ζωής και τις ανάγκες για δικαιοσύνη. Απορρίπτουμε παρεμβάσεις που στερούν την αυτονομία και διεκδικούμε ένα μέλλον με πλήρη συμπερίληψη και αποδοχή.
Αυτή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα, δε ζητάμε μόνο ευαισθητοποίηση. Ζητάμε δράση. Να τιμήσουμε αυτούς που χάθηκαν, δημιουργώντας έναν κόσμο που αγκαλιάζει όσους είναι ακόμα μαζί μας.

Die Gruppe „Voicing Autism“ des Specialty Club New Voices D117A, Lions Clubs International, fordert anlässlich des Welt-Autismus-Tages dringende Veränderungen 2. April 2025
Zum Welt-Autismus-Tag erhebt die Gruppe Voicing Autism des Specialty Club New Voices D117A, Lions Clubs International, ihre Stimme für systemischen Wandel, globale Solidarität und radikale Inklusion von autistischen Menschen.
Die diesjährige Gedenktag ist von Trauer und Entschlossenheit geprägt, nach dem tragischen Suizid eines 18-jährigen autistischen Jugendlichen in Griechenland am 25. März. Isolation, Missverständnisse und fehlende Unterstützung spiegeln das weltweite Versagen wider, autistischen Menschen das zu geben, was jedem zusteht: Würde, Verbindung und Hoffnung.
Wir schließen uns den Worten von Dr. Temple Grandin an: „Ich bin anders, nicht weniger.“ Dieser Satz ist zu einem Leitspruch der neurodivergenten Gemeinschaft geworden – ein kraftvolles Bekenntnis dazu, dass Autismus keine Schwäche ist, sondern eine Form menschlicher Vielfalt. Was sich ändern muss, ist nicht der Mensch, sondern die Bedingungen, unter denen er leben muss.
Autismus ist keine Tragödie. Die Tragödie ist der Ausschluss. Tragisch ist die fehlende Empathie, Flexibilität und Investition in barrierefreie Strukturen.
Als Mitglieder der Lions verpflichten wir uns, im Dienst zuzuhören – den Stimmen autistischer Menschen, ihren Erfahrungen und ihrem Ruf nach Gerechtigkeit. Wir lehnen schädliche Eingriffe ab und setzen uns ein für inklusive Bildung, selbstbestimmtes Leben und politische Teilhabe.
An diesem Welt-Autismus-Tag fordern wir mehr als Bewusstsein: Wir fordern Veränderung. Lasst uns die Verlorenen ehren, indem wir die Gegenwart für die Lebenden sicherer machen.
