A Sleeping Servant
This statue depicted a little boy, perhaps a servant, sleepy while waiting for his lord to lead him back home by a lantern, probably after a banquet or celebration. The child seems well-fed, reflect ing his lord’s wealth. The statue comes from the Brullus area, where it decorated a villa or spacious wealthy house.
It is known from Greek papyri that Brullus was still a flourishing place in the great reign of Constantine. An estimate suggests it was liable to pay only half the taxes as those imposed on a thriving city like El-Bahnasa in central Egypt.
