Συνέντευξη με τους Γερμανούς DARK SKY

What inspired you to start making music, and how did the formation of Dark Sky come about?

We went to the same school in the 80s and loved hard rock and heavy metal. We wanted to emulate our idols, AC/CD, Scorpions and Judas Priest. So what was more obvious than to start our own band, just with three chords on the guitar? Since none of us dared to take on the role of the singer at first, a 31-year-old Englishman with country rock experience contacted us. Without waiting to see if we agreed, he announced after the first rehearsal that we were now complete – and the story took its course.

Are there any non-musical influences that inspire your creative process, such as films, literature, or visual art?

Films and literature are indeed inspiring from time to time. But the main influences for creativity, aside from the music we like to listen to, are life itself. Loriot once said that people who have not experienced anything need ideas above all. Something like that.

How do you keep your sound fresh and evolving across years?

On the one hand, each of us is always inspired by other bands and genres, but on the other hand, new band members always bring new influences to our music.

What’s the story or concept behind your latest release Signs Of The Time, and how does it compare to your earlier work?

The album was created at a time when a lot of things around us were very strange. There was the pandemic, there were all the restrictions that made life very difficult, not only for us musicians. We reflected these impressions in a few song titles and also in the album title. Of course, it also reflects how frustrated and worried we were and are about some developments. I think this album was also something like a new start for the band. After the pandemic, I had to put together a completely new DARK SKY line-up because all my friends in the band had retired from music. This time, I was also working very closely with our producer Markus Teske from the Bazement Studio in pre-production. Other composers were also involved, such as Hannes Braun from Kissin Dynamite. This resulted in new and interesting influences overall, which gave the album a slightly different sound.

Any favorite song from this release?

That changes from time to time, but at the moment I like the title song of the current CD, “Signs Of The Time,” the best. On the other hand, your own songs are like your own children, you love them all, don’t you?

Why someone should hear your new album?

Well, “Signs Of The Time” has a lot of catchy hooks and harmonies. The sound, the arrangements and the whole production are really good. So if you like melodic rock with a pinch of power and symphonic metal, you certainly won’t be disappointed

What is the most challenging aspect of translating your studio work into a live performance?

I think the biggest challenge is that the song should have at least the same power and impact on stage as it does on the album. But since we don’t have the same options live as in the studio, we have to check in the rehearsal room what everyone plays and sings live. We actually find that some songs sound great in the rehearsal room, but we somehow can’t get some across properly. It’s hard to say exactly why that is. When we play the songs at a concert, it can have a slightly different effect and that’s how we develop the program for festivals or a tour.

Have you noticed changes in your audience or fanbase over the years?

Well, some fans are getting older, ha, ha, ha. No, seriously, that’s a hard question to answer. But generally, I think our audience is older than when we started the band. 😉

What are some of the goals or ambitions you have yet to achieve as Dark Sky?

After the really good reviews of our current album “Signs Of The Time”, it is a big challenge to record a new album that exceeds this level. And also to produce a few exciting music videos to reach even more people with our music. This year we played at some big international festivals in Europe. We want to build on that in 2025 and maybe even play live outside of Europe with DARK SKY. With our agency Angels PR we have a partner who has the necessary contacts for this. There are also a few festivals in Europe that we would really like to play at for example Wacken!

How would you like your fans to feel or what would you like them to experience when listening to your music?

I think music should be many things: entertainment, inspiration and of course a source of feelings and dreams. So if our listeners take something away from it and experience it, then that’s wonderful. At concerts, there is also the visual aspect and the event character, which should give the audience good feelings.

So be excited about what happens next year, and if there is a chance to see DARK SKY live somewhere, it would be great if we could meet you there.
